As information technology continues to evolve, we are faced with a paradox where new technology both drives innovation and at the same time burdens the environment. The latest trend in sustainable technology use – refurbished used mobile phones – offers a solution to this challenge.
In a world where electronics have long contributed to increasing environmental problems, reNewed AB that, together with customers and partners, in 2023 we have saved significantly on our planet's resources and contributed to a more circular economy.
reNewed AB – environmental savings in 2023
reNewed passed a remarkable milestone in 2023. By giving new life to electronic products, we have reduced waste and saved the environment approximately 3,8 tons of e-waste – a clear step forward towards a more sustainable future.
Equivalent annual emissions from 250 passenger cars
By offering renewed units, we have managed to reduce CO₂ emissions by a whole 92% compared to if customers had bought new mobile phones. This corresponds to almost 1,153 tons of CO₂ – or the annual emissions from approximately 250 passenger cars.
Equivalent to the weight of 820 elephants
Our contribution has also led to a reduction in 92% raw material, which means a saving of over 4,099,800 kg of raw material. This can be compared to the weight of approximately 820 elephants.
The equivalent of water filling 930 Olympic-sized swimming pools
Through our operations, we have also reduced water consumption by 83%, which saved approximately 2,319,800,000 liters of waterThis amount corresponds to more than 930 Olympic swimming pools and underlines our important role in preserving the Earth's water resources.
3,8 tons of e-waste saved
Finally, through our renewed mobile phones, we have contributed to a saving of almost 3,8 tons of e-waste – compared to buying new mobile phones. This is an important step in the fight against the growing global problem of electronic waste.
How we reduce the environmental impact of refurbished mobile phones
Refurbished mobiles are carefully tested, refurbished and restored to near-new condition. The process can include battery replacement, cosmetic improvements and software updates. In this way, devices that would otherwise become waste are given a new lease of life, reducing the need for new production and thus also the environmental impact.

Choosing a refurbished mobile phone over a new one not only means a reduced environmental impact, but also significant cost savings.
"Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the financial benefits of refurbished mobile phones, where savings can reach 50% compared to new devices," says Benjamin Kibebe, CEO of reNewed AB.

"Our strict quality control and collaboration with authorized Samsung and Apple repair shops ensure that our refurbished phones meet the highest standards," confirms Kibebe.
