The origin of the Lucia tradition
The Lucia celebration originates from both the Christian legend of Saint Lucia and older Nordic traditions. Saint Lucia was a Christian martyr who lived in Syracuse in Sicily during the fourth century. According to legend, she carried candles and food to the Christians who hid in the city's catacombs during persecution. In Sweden, this tradition has been mixed with pre-Christian midwinter celebrations, making Lucia a celebration of light in the middle of winter's darkness.
How we celebrate Lucia
Lucia celebration takes place on December 13 every year. The day often begins with the Lucia Procession, where a person dressed as Lucia, with a crown of candles in her hair, leads a procession of singers. These singers, often dressed in white clothes and with candles in their hands, sing traditional Lucia songs. Lucia processions occur in schools, workplaces, churches and public places all over Sweden.
Traditional fluffy cats and gingerbread
Lucia also includes special pastries. The most famous are 'lusses cats', saffron-scented buns in the shape of an 'S', and gingerbread. These are often served with mulled wine, a spicy and hot drink.
